The AutCAD bad practices mentioned in this list are some of the very common ones that are often seen in drawing offices.

So, here is our list of AutoCAD bad practices that you should avoid.

1. Putting objects on the Defpoints layer:

It doesn’t make any sense to put an object on the Defpoint layer that you don’t want to plot, let me tell you why.

The Defpoint layer is created automatically when you add dimension and it is always a no-plot layer, you can’t make it a “plot” layer.

So, putting objects that you don’t want to plot on this layer may seem like a good thing but what about rare instances where you may want to plot objects of the Defpoints layer?

In that case, you can’t turn the plot option ON for the Defpoints layer.

So, it makes more sense to create a new layer, call it “no-plot” or something similar and put your objects there.

Now you can turn off the plot for this layer and when required you can turn it on as well.

Besides you can create unlimited layers in AutoCAD so there is no point in trying to squeeze the maximum output from your existing list of layers.

2. Not assigning object properties by layer:

I am sure you must have received drawings with blocks and other objects assigned to a particular layer but these objects are still using their custom properties not as per layer.

When you change layer properties these objects just stand out and don’t inherit properties from layers and their properties remain unchanged which may not always be good.

Now in some instances, you may want to add custom properties that are different from the layer, and that’s totally fine but try to assign properties by layer for as many objects as possible using.

3. Making all objects on layer 0:

Why would you do that?

AutoCAD offers a great way of managing drawing objects using layers which also helps in controlling the properties of multiple objects directly using layer properties.

This is simply a bad practice which is seen in a novice or a lazy drafter and it should also be avoided wherever possible.

4. Not using layering standards:

As far as possible try to use layering standards such as AIA or your company standard.

This ensures consistency when the drawing is transferred to other contractors.

If consistent standards are not followed, then you might end up with drawings having different naming standards that need to be translated before they can be used properly thus killing extra work hours.

5. Placing objects on the wrong layers:

This issue can simply be avoided by reviewing drawings before submission.

Sometimes not all of the drawing objects are placed on the correct layer, for example; not placing all of the doors in a drawing on its layer and other similar situations.

One easy way to check if all your objects are on their respective layer is by using the “Layer Walk” option for key layers or all layers (if you have a smaller drawing) as shown in the following animated GIF.

6. Not specifying Drawing units:

This is a complete rookie mistake where you simply start with whatever template AutoCAD started your drawing with.

Just select a standard template that your company uses or use the one from AutoCAD default templates and specify the drawing unit, precision and length format like decimal or architectural before you begin your drawing.

It may seem like changing these settings later is easy but it’s not, changing the drawing unit in AutoCAD is not immune to errors so taking care of this before you begin your drawing is a good practice.

7. Not using annotative scales:

Using the different scales of an object for different viewports and putting them on different layers is an obsolete technique.

Annotative property in AutoCAD is introduced to get rid of this issue and to make drawing scale transition a seamless task but still, most of the drafters try to avoid using annotative scale despite its great features.

So, when adding objects like dimensions and text directly in model space drawings, create them using the annotative property.

8. Not Locking Viewports in Paperspace:

When you are done changing the scale of a viewport in paper space then you should always lock that viewport to avoid changing its scale accidentally.

The accidental change of viewport scale may go unnoticed and down the road, you may have to spend extra time trying to correct it or figure out what went wrong in your drawing.

9. Blocks are not created on layer 0:

Many drafters place AutoCAD blocks on a custom layer other than layer 0, but it should be avoided and blocks should be created on layer 0.

Layer 0 has a special significance when it comes to creating blocks and the properties of a block will be inherited from layer only when you create it on layer 0.

So, unless you want a block with a specific set of properties that doesn’t change based on its layer, put it on layer 0.

10. Not putting XREF on a separate layer:

As far as possible always try to put Xref on a separate layer dedicated to only Xref and also ensure that the layer is not layer 0.

In this way, you can control the properties of X-refs in a better way and also it becomes easier to manage these external references in drawings.

Also, prefix the layer containing Xref with X or Z to keep it at the bottom of the layer list.

Toggling the visibility of all Xref’s also becomes easy when they are put on dedicated layers and with a prefix identifying the Xref layer clearly, it becomes easier to manage it too.

11. Not using eTransmit for drawing containing Xref:

Generally, Xref’s of a drawing are saved on multiple network drives (or local drives) and if you want to send a drawing containing multiple Xref then eTransmit is the best option.

Sending all Xref manually is not a good idea as it may cause broken file paths and missing references.

To ensure all contents of a drawing containing xref are sent use AutoCAD eTransmit tool as it creates a zip file of all Xref’s and as the process is done automatically it extracts all objects from their respective locations and there is no chance of missing any file.

12. Making Xref drawings on layer 0:

Putting objects on layer 0 and then “Xref’ing” that drawing into another is not a good practice.

If you do that then the layer properties of the Xref are not copied from its main drawing.

But if you create a drawing on a layer other than layer 0 and then attach that drawing in another drawing as an Xref then it will be copied along with its layers and layer properties.

So you can later change the Xref properties using its dedicated layer.

13. Using complete commands instead of aliases:

It is better to use command aliases instead of complete commands on the AutoCAD command line.

Moreover, if autocomplete feature of the command line is ON then you need not enter the complete command as it will automatically show you the relevant commands based on the first few letters you type.

You can also try using the command line more often as it is quicker than using the ribbon interface, but this is a general suggestion as in the end it just comes down to personal preference.

14. Copy and paste from drawing of different versions or software:

This is a thing that can’t be avoided always but if possible it should be avoided.

Copying and pasting data from drawings of different versions or from non-native DWG files created with other software can bring with it unnecessary clutter in the drawing database which will simply bloat your drawing file.

The purge command can clean the AutoCAD drawings but it may not be able to clean all the redundant data types.

15. Not using associative hatch:

Whenever you hatch an area in the drawing try to keep it associative so that changing the boundary changes the associated hatch region as well.

Also, try not to explode the hatch because once exploded a hatch can’t be modified using the hatch editor tab and it creates a mess of lines and other geometries that only look like a hatch but don’t work like one.

16. Not using an Associative array:

Using an associative array you can keep the option of modifying the array open anytime you want.

If you explode an array or create a nonassociative array then it can’t be modified later.

So try to avoid the bad practice of making nonassociative arrays.

17. Not Purging drawing regularly:

Many drafters tend to overlook the importance of PURGE command.

It is always a good practice to use the PURGE command for cleaning redundant data types, named objects and more.

It is always recommended that you purge your drawings especially before you share them so that you can keep only the necessary data in them.

18. Not using the OVERKILL command:

Using this command you can make your drawing cleaner by removing overlapping geometries and combining separate entities into polylines.

In general, you should avoid using several smaller pieces of lines for closed geometries and instead use polylines for the same.

But if you’ve already used several broken lines then you can combine them all into one polyline using the OVERKILL command.

19. Avoid different dimension styles in a drawing:

This is a bad practice that makes the drawing look very unprofessional.

Whenever possible use one main dimension style for your primary dimensions and for other dimensions with small variations you can use dimension overrides.

20. Changing dimension value rather than drawing accurately:

This is a rookie mistake but an experienced CAD drafter is also not immune to this.

Always make your drawing accurate so that the dimensions show the “real” value and don’t trick anyone by changing the dimension value to whatever it is supposed to be.

If the dimensions are not showing what they should be then modify your drawing to make it right not the dimensions.

21. Keeping all object snap modes ON:

New CAD users may find it useful to keep all object snap modes ON to enable the selection of any snap point, but it is certainly a bad practice.

It causes your drawing to snap to incorrect points which are in close proximity which will eventually make inaccurate drawings.

To avoid this error try to keep only the required snap points ON or try using Shift right-click (object snap override) for selecting specific snap points.

22. Add text notes in paper space:

Add text entities like notes, tables, title blocks and other content containing text in the paper space.

The biggest advantage of using paper space for text is the use of paper text height, which means you can avoid using the annotative property for these texts and you can directly set the size of text as per the size of paper in use.

I am not recommending that you completely avoid using text in model space, you should not do that.

Not all texts can be added in paper space so when you add text in the model space make it annotative so that the size of all texts remains consistent throughout the drawing.

23. Avoid tracing 3D drawings to generate 2D:

This creates a really big problem which may not be visible from the plan view but as soon as you change the view to look at the Z axis you will find that the drawing is not completely flat.

Making corrections in this type of drawing is a time taking thing and it is something that could have been totally avoided in the first place by making everything on XY.

24. Using MTEXT columns:

This might be a thing of personal preference but here is the recommendation.

Use separate blocks of Mtext for separate columns rather than using one large Mtext block and separating it into columns using its native “column” option.

Using separate Mtext blocks you get more control over the text rather than using the “column” feature of Mtext.

Also, whenever working with several Mtext blocks make sure they align along rows and columns because unaligned text blocks just look unprofessional.

Autodesk 360 rendering is not just simple plain another rendering tool, it offers a variety of new features which are not available in the software and it can be used to create stunning photorealistic renderings with your AutoCAD drawing.

In this article, I will show you some of the Autodesk cloud rendering features which you might be unaware of. To access Autodesk cloud rendering you need to first create an account on A360.

Once you get Autodesk subscription account activated you will get 100 free cloud credits as a gift and you can use these cloud credits for creating your renderings. Even if you don’t have a subscription account you can make a new trial account where you get 25 free cloud credits for your renderings.

Make sure you have created your final geometry with all required views, material and light settings. Also, ensure that drawing is created with AutoCAD 2010 or later version because older versions are not supported for cloud rendering.

Once you are prepared with the drawing open it in software and go to visualize tab (for AutoCAD 2016) and click on Render in Cloud button on A360 panel. From A360 window select the view which you want to render or select Render all model views from Model View drop-down if you want to render all views.

You can also click on Notify me by email radio button if you want to get notified when your rendering is complete. Once these settings are done click on Start Rendering button.

The drawing will start to upload on Autodesk cloud account and upon completion, a popup message will appear in the software. Click on the link of popup message to go to the Autodesk cloud account or directly go to https://gallery.autodesk.com/a360rendering and login with your credentials and there you will find your drawing ready to be rendered.

When the rendering is done you can download the image by right-clicking on the rendered image and selecting Download Image option from the contextual menu. But if you are still not satisfied with the rendering, you can apply additional settings to the drawing and create rendering again as long as you have sufficient cloud credits.

To render the drawing again with new settings select the small down pointing arrow in the rendering image on A360 account and select re-render using new settings from the menu.

A new render settings panel will appear where you can adjust settings of the renderings.

Creating a rendering with new background preset

You can add background presets which are not available in the AutoCAD software. For adding an environment preset click on Environment dropdown and select the required preset from the drop down menu. In this case, I am selecting Seaport environment and with remaining settings unchanged here is my final rendering.

For creating simple small file size renderings you don’t need cloud credits but for higher quality renderings you need cloud credits. Typically 1 cloud credit is consumed for every single megapixel of rendering.

Creating a transparent background rendering

You can also create a rendering with transparent background in png format. To create this type of rendering select PNG (lossless) from File format dropdown of render settings panel in A360 account and also make sure that Alpha (Transparency Background) radio button is selected as shown in the image below.

The final rendering with background transparency will look like this, where the checkerboard pattern is the transparent part.

Creating a panorama view

This is a special type of rendering where rendering is created for entire drawing irrespective of the current view. Only the position of the camera remains fixed but the orientation of camera can be revolved in the panorama view of rendering to get a 360-degree view of rendering. To create this panorama go to the down pointing arrow on image preview on A360 account and select Render as > Stereo Panorama.

Stereo panorama can be used in Samsung VR sets but If you want to create simple panorama you can also select Render as > Panorama from the menu. Make all settings for panorama in render settings panel and click on start rendering when you are ready for rendering.

To download this panorama you can select the down pointing arrow on the panorama preview and select download stereo pano as zip option to download it in a zip file. The files will be downloaded in a zip format, extract all contents of the file and open pano.html file using a web browser preferably internet explorer to see and interact with the panorama. The final panorama view will look like this.

Solar Study in A360

Using solar study you can recreate the effect of sunlight in your model and see its effects in real-time by setting the date and time settings. To create solar study select the rendered view and click on down pointing arrow then select render as and then solar study as shown in the image below.

Once solar study settings panel opens up, set the date range for which you want to create the rendering and then select the time range and click on start rendering button. Your complete solar study will be created as a video file and you can download the video in mp4 format by selecting save as option from right-click contextual menu.

The final solar study of interior view in my case looked like this.

Creating very high-quality renderings

To create high-quality renderings you need more cloud credits. The renderings may take more time than usual and the file size will also be large. To create a high-quality rendering select the rendered image from A360 page, click on the down-pointing arrow and select re-render using new settings.

From render quality dropdown of render settings panel select Final and in image format select jpeg (high quality) now from image size drop down select 1, 2.25 or 9 megapixel quality and click on  Start Rendering button.

Your rendering will take more cloud credits and more time than usual but the quality of renderings will also be very high. Here is my final rendering which I created with mentioned settings.

I switched from a standard mouse that comes with a Logitech MK850 keyboard-mouse set to 3DConnexion CAD Mouse about three years back and since then it’s the only mouse I used for all my CAD workflows (and I am never going back to using any other mouse!).

It’s ergonomic and fits very comfortably in your hand.

It has a dedicated middle wheel click button which I have found extremely useful for panning drawings as it replaces pressing and holding the middle wheel which is a great advantage considering long hours of work.

There are also dedicated zoom keys near your thumb, and you can also use the standard mouse wheel for zooming in and out of your geometry.

Apart from left and right-click all the other buttons can be programmed using 3DConnexion software.

So, in total, you get five programmable buttons that can be assigned to dedicated commands as per your CAD software.

It has a high-resolution sensor of 7200 DPI which is great for precise movement.

This mouse is built separately for left-hand and right-hand users and when purchasing you can select your preferred mouse.

You can also get a wired or wireless version of the mice. The battery in the wireless version is inbuilt and can be charged using a micro-USB cable provided with the mouse.

With an ergonomic shape and an improved optical mouse switch, this mouse is certainly a great addition to this list.

The thumb and side area are made with rubber textured material for a better grip with the body made up of plastic.

It is suitable for mid-sized palms and is currently available for right-hand users only.

Generally, Razor mice use mechanical switches which tend to become unreliable after long usage and start registering missed clicks but with this improved optical switch, Razor has done away with a major drawback in its mice.

The mouse has 10 programmable keys. The scroll wheel supports smooth and ratcheted movements and you can even set the scrolling resistance in this mouse as per your preference.

As it’s a gaming mouse it comes with RGB lights which you may or may not like based on your taste, but it will never interfere with your productivity as it’s a wired mouse that does not consume battery for the lights.

You don’t need to worry about battery consumption or recharging it either. 

The wire is sturdy but not stiff so it won’t interfere with mouse movement and the wire is braided as well.

This mouse is part of this list for one exclusive reason, its 20 programmable buttons. When comparing it with its closest rival Razer Naga, we found it wins clearly because of its design alone.

This mouse has 12 programmable buttons all on the thumb side, but these buttons are designed in such a way that every button has a different shape.

This solves the issue of wrong clicks even when the buttons are closely placed which is clearly not the case with Razer Naga.

With the G-shift button near the scroll wheel, the total customizable button nearly doubles as you can assign a different function to the same button when clicked with the G-shift button pressed.

You can program these 12 buttons as well as the other 8 buttons using Logitech G Hub software.

It has a middle scroll wheel with tilt support which means you can also tilt the scroll wheel to move horizontally in your 2D or 3D space.

Another distinguishing feature of this mouse is its third Ring click button which is next to the right-click and use can be used to assign any dedicated function like Panning your drawing.

It is kind of like the 3D Connexion CAD mouse dedicated middle scroll wheel click button. As you can imagine for a CAD user a dedicated Pan button is a big deal, at least for me it is!

This mouse also supports a maximum of 8200 DPI resolution, and you can easily switch between 5 DPI modes. It’s a wired mouse so no need to replace batteries or charge it frequently.

Apart from the ergonomic design, it has a soft rubber grip on the side for additional grip and its cable is braided which is not too stiff and won’t interfere with mouse movement.

In the latest generation of this mouse, one of the most remarkable features is the magnetic 20-degree tilt adjustment which will help you work in two hand postures of 0 degrees and 20 degrees.

Its shape is ergonomic and because of its large size, it fits comfortably in your hand too. The material is soft rubber type which is again great for a good grip on the mice.

The scroll wheel can not only rotate but you can also tilt it left and right which is great for navigating in 2D and 3D space.

This mouse also supports multiple computer workflow which means you can connect with multiple computers with the push of a button.

This is the only mouse in our list which comes without any bells and whistles, but it just gets the work done.

I prefer the Logitech M190 which is a wireless mouse with a removable AA battery. The battery lasts up to 18 months as it has auto sleep power-saving mode which puts the mouse to sleep when idle for a long time.

It can be connected using a USB receiver provided with the mouse and it works with windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome operating systems.

It has a sensor that supports up to 1000 DPI resolution which is quite decent for most CAD workflows.

It is ideal for larger hand sizes but if you want the smaller version then go with M185 which is almost similar in features but is comparatively smaller.

The only downside I have experienced with this mouse is its robustness.

The mouse buttons are not very robust and they hardly last beyond a year of rigorous usage. I always ended up buying one mouse every year because of its unreliable clicks after a year of usage.

But at this price point, it’s not a big issue as you can easily get a replacement without breaking the bank.

If you are thinking that your drawing does not need optimization then think again, maybe you are missing great benefits of having a clean drawing.

An optimized drawing with a minimum amount of unnecessary data tends to perform faster, the drawing load time is significantly better and chances of drawing corruption also reduce to a great extent.

In this article, I have compiled a list of six efficient ways of cleaning and optimizing your drawing. Let’s start with the most common Purge and Overkill commands.

PURGE and Overkill

These are probably the first few commands which are used by almost every draftsman to clean their drawing. Purging a drawing cleans all redundant or unused entities like layers, blocks, line types etc from your drawing.

To use purge command type PURGE on the command line and hit enter, a new purge window will pop up. Click on Purge All button from this window, you may need to click on Purge all button several times to remove all redundant objects from the drawing.

When the drawing becomes completely clean the purge all button grays out, click on close button to exit purge window.

Overkill is another such cleanup tool, by using overkill all the overlapping or duplicate drawing entities can be removed and merged together.

To use overkill type OVERKILL on the command line and press enter, the command line will now prompt you to select objects from drawing area. Type ALL and press enter, this will select complete drawing in our selection set for applying overkill. Press enter again and click on OK in the delete duplicate objects window.

Write block

This may not look like a straightforward drawing cleanup tool but it is very efficient in cleaning all useless clutter from your drawing.

This method should only be used when you have no other option of cleaning your drawing as this method causes loss of data from your drawing including layer assignments.

This command transfers all drawing elements to another clean and blank template leaving all clutter behind. To use this feature open the affected drawing then type WBLOCK and press enter.

This will open write block window, select Objects radio button from source panel and then click on pick points button and specify a base point in drawing. Then move to objects panel and click on select objects button and make a selection to include all drawing entities from your drawing area.

Although you could have also used Entire drawing radio button from source panel to include all drawing entities in your selection set, but I prefer making the manual selection because it helps in avoiding selection of invisible drawing entities which are generally present in your drawing outside your work area.

From the Destination panel specify the path where you want to save the exported drawing and click OK. The cleaned drawing will now be saved on the specified path.

Audit and Recover

These commands are generally used to remove errors from AutoCAD drawings, a drawing containing errors can unnecessarily become bloated up.

To clean this kind of drawings type AUDIT on the command line and press enter. Command line will now prompt you to specify whether you want to fix detected errors or not, type Y and press enter to find and fix all detected errors.

Recover command can be used at places where the drawing is corrupt to such an extent that it can’t be opened. For these situations open a blank drawing type RECOVER and press enter then browse affected drawing from select file window and click on open.

AutoCAD will attempt to recover your drawing removing all errors from it and then it will open it in a new session.

DGN PURGE

Sometimes AutoCAD drawings file size becomes too bloated up with seemingly no data in it.

This error also leads to other issues like lagging cursor when selecting annotations like text and dimensions, copy paste not working in AutoCAD and file taking too long to open.

This issue also spreads to unaffected files if data from the affected file is copied to an unaffected file. This issue starts in a drawing due to improper data import from DGN files resulting in huge drawing database.

Autodesk offered a hotfix of this issue for versions older than 2014 but with AutoCAD 2015 and later version they implemented DGN purge feature within the standard PURGE command.

To remove this kind of orphaned data from AutoCAD 2015 and later versions type PURGE and press enter then select Automatically purge orphaned data radio button from purge window as shown in the image above.

Cleaning unreferenced Regapps

With the excess of unreferenced Registered application ID’s the drawing starts to show larger than normal size and performance issue creeps in.

To clean unreferenced Regapp Id’s type -PURGE on the command line (don’t forget to add a dash before PURGE) and press enter. Then select Regapp from the command line and press enter when command line prompts you to specify the name of Regapp. Keep pressing enter till all unreferenced Regapps Id’s are purged.

Although you can use -PURGE command for purging unreferenced Regapp Id’s in a single drawing but for multiple drawings it simply becomes a time taking task and for those cases you can use Regapp ID cleanup utility tool to batch process unreferenced Regapp Id’s cleanup.

You can also use -PURGE command to clean other entities like zero-length geometry and empty text objects that otherwise cannot be deleted from standard PURGE command.

Drawing Purge Add in

This free add-in is available for download on Autodesk app store, download it here.

I tried this app and it worked perfectly, this tool can take the pain of applying many commands to clean your drawing out of your workflow. Using this tool you can purge almost all redundant and unused entity in your drawing including unused DGN data.

If a drawing contains an X-ref then it will scan for DGN data in referenced files as well and prompt you to select whether you want to clean DGN data from Xref also.

To use this tool download it from the link above and install it. Then restart your AutoCAD software and go to add-ins tab and select Purge from Drawing Purge panel.

The tool can also perform bulk cleaning task for multiple drawings. To perform batch cleaning operation click on Batch Purge icon on Drawing purge panel of add-ins tab. A batch drawing purge & settings window will appear, click on Select drawings or Select Folder icon in the top left corner of this window and select a folder containing all your drawings or select multiple drawings manually.

When all the drawings are listed in the window click on Purge button on the lower right corner as shown in the image below.

It will perform purge operation on all selected drawing’s and it will show file size before and after performing purge along with a list of items purged for each drawing.

Smartpurger

This one is another great app that you can use to clean your drawing. I tried it on windows 10 PC with AutoCAD 2017 and it worked smoothly.

For using this tool you need to download it from JTB world website or Autodesk app store, it’s trial version can batch process a maximum of 10 files but you can remove this limitation by purchasing its license.

To use SmartPurger download and install it, then restart your AutoCAD software. Go to add-ins tab and click on the Smartpurger icon, JTB WORLD SmartPurger window will pop up. Click on add drawings icon on the top left of this window and select all your drawings which you want to include in the batch for cleaning.

You can also select a folder using Add Folders Only button on the top left side of the window, selecting a folder will include all files of the folder in the queue.

When you have all your drawings in the queue click Run and wait for the app to do the rest for you.
