In an AutoCAD drawing, there are some stubborn layers that won’t purge no matter what you try, even on seemingly empty layers with no object on them if you try PURGE you won’t be able to delete them.

To get rid of these stubborn layers and to clean your drawing from unused layers you can use LAYDEL and LAYMRG commands.

Using these commands you can even delete Defpoints layer, but I won’t recommend that.

LAYDEL Command

This command deletes all objects of a layer and purges the layer no matter what you have on that layer. Even the most stubborn layers are also deleted with this command.

But this command also has its fair share of exceptions and there may be situations when even this commnad won’t be able to delete objects of a layer and this is all for a good reason. Deleting these objects may create errors, so, if AutoCAD is unable to delete them then you can safely assume that it’s for the good.

To use this command type LAYDEL on the command line and press enter, your command line will show this message.

Select an object on the layer which you want to delete from drawing area and press Enter then select Yes from command line options and press enter again.

All objects of the selected layer will be deleted and the layer will also be purged. If the layer has no objects then you can select Name option from the command line as shown in the image above and select the layer which you want to delete from the list of layers.

If you delete a layer which contains an object from a block then it will delete that object from block too and the block will be redefined accordingly.

In the example below, I have a block shown in image A below with a rectangle on red layer. If we delete the red layer from the drawing the rectangle from the block will also be deleted and the block will be redefined as shown in the image B below.

As you can see from the example above, it is likely to accidentally delete objects from drawings using this command so always use it with caution.

LAYMRG Command

You can use this command if you want to delete a layer and also preserve objects on it.

This command will merge source layer with the target layer such that source layer is purged and objects on source layer are assigned to target layer. All the objects on source layer will acquire layer properties of target layer after using LAYMRG.

In the example below, we have three geometries on three different layers. let’s assume that we want to merge layer red with layer green so that all objects of the red layer will get shifted to the green layer.

Type LAYMRG on the command line and press enter, click on the red object from the drawing and press enter then click on the green object from the drawing area and press enter again. Select Yes from the options of the command line to accept the changes and exit the command.

You will notice that the red layer will be deleted from the drawing and all objects of the red layer will be transferred to the green layer as shown in the image below.

In this case too if an object is part of a block then the block will be redefined to take new properties of the assigned layer. Here also try to exercise caution while using this command to avoid accidental loss of data from your drawing.

At times you may need to convert line to polyline or polyline to a spline and sometimes Spline to a Polyline.

You can do all of these tasks using a few simple commands, let’s see the step-by-step method of converting these curves.

Convert Line to Polyline

You can convert a Line to a Polyline using the “Polyline Edit” tool of AutoCAD.

Using this tool you can also convert an arc or a spline into a polyline.

However, you can’t convert a circle, ellipse and elliptical arc into a polyline using this tool.

To start this, type PE on the command line and press Enter to start the “Polyline Edit” command.

The command line will prompt you to select objects for making changes.

Click on the object which you want to change to polyline, you can also select multiple objects by selecting Multiple from the command prompt.

Once you have made the selection a new prompt will appear on the command line stating that the “selected object is not a polyline do you want to convert it” as shown in the image below.

Type Y and press enter twice to convert the object into a polyline and exit this command.

Convert Polyline into Spline

To convert a polyline into spline type PE and press enter, then select the polyline which you want to convert and select spline from the prompt appearing on the command line.

Press enter to exit the polyline edit command.

This will convert your polyline into a “polyline spline” which looks like a spline but inherits properties of the 2D polyline.

To convert it into true spline type SPE on the command line and press Enter.

This will start the Spline Edit command, select “polyline spline” from the drawing area and press Enter.

The 2D polyline we created in the previous step will be converted into a true spline and it will also inherit all the properties of a spline.

Convert Spline into Polyline

To convert a Spline into a polyline type PE on the command line press enter then select the spline from the drawing area and press enter again.

The spline will be converted into a polyline.

Alternatively, you can also use Spline Edit (SPE) command to convert a “true spline” into a polyline by simply selecting the “Convert to Polyline” option from the command line options.

In this case when the command prompts you to specify the precision enter the default value 10 or any other value which you like.

The higher the value of precision more accurate will be the converted polyline with respect to the spline but it will also create a dense polyline.

The value of precision can be set between 0 and 99.

In this article, I will tell you about making isometric dimension and text in an isometric drawing. For explaining this feature I will use a simple isometric cube as shown in the image below.

Making Isometric Dimensions:

Make aligned dimensions A, B and C on the geometry as shown in drawing A above using DIMALIGNED command.

Now type DIMEDIT on the command line and press enter, select oblique from the command line as shown in the image below.

Now click on dimension marked A from drawing shown above and press enter. Command line will prompt you to select an angle to align this dimension type 30 and press enter again. Your dimension will now align with the geometry to make it look like isometric dimension.

For dimensions B and C you can use the same method with the oblique angle of 30 and -30 respectively. Your final drawing will look like this after using DIMEDIT on all three dimensions.

Making Isometric Dimension Text:

The dimensions now look correct but when you look closely at dimension text they are still not properly aligned as per drawing. You need to make changes to dimension text also in order to make it look normal.

Type DIMTEDIT on the command line and press enter then click on the dimension which you want to edit, I am selecting dimension C for this case.

From the command line, select Angle option and type an angle of 30 degrees then press enter. The dimension text will now align with the dimension line. For dimensions, A and B use an angle of 30 and -30 degrees respectively in DIMTEDIT command.

Making Isometric Text:

To write text on the isometric cube type TEXT on the command line and press Enter. Now click on the face of cube towards dimension C and enter a text height value and rotation angle of 30 degrees in the command line prompts.

Type any text and press enter twice to exit the TEXT command, I am using “Text” as the sample text on the isometric cube.

Repeat the process of writing text on the face of cube towards dimension B as well, but in this case change angle of text to -30 degrees keeping all other parameters unchanged.

Now select text on the face of dimension C then right click and select Properties from the contextual menu. From the Text panel of properties palette change value of Obliquing to 30.

Repeat the process for text on cube facing dimension B but in this case change obliquing value to -30. The final drawing with isometric dimension and text will look like the image shown below.

You can convert geometry of spline to a polyline or an arc in AutoCAD with “Polyline Edit” or PEDIT command. This feature does not convert Polyline to spline or arc rather it gives them all the properties like anchor points and geometry keeping object type as Polyline.

In this article, I will show you how to do it using this sample geometry which is made with a polyline.

Making Polyline look like spline:

Double click on a Polyline to start Polyline edit command or type PEDIT on command line press enter and select Polyline to start Polyline edit command.

Now from command line select spline and press enter. This will make your Polyline look like a spline curve in such a way that vertices of original Polyline curve (shown with the green cross in image 3) will act as control vertices for the spline. The final geometry will look like image 3 shown below.

Although using this method you can change the geometry of a Polyline to a spline but it will still remain a 2D Polyline. When you hover the cursor over this “spline” or check the property then AutoCAD will show it as a 2D Polyline.

Making Polyline look like Arc:

Double click on Polyline or use PEDIT to start Polyline edit then select Fit from options appearing on the command line.

The Fit option will convert your Polyline into series of tangentially connected arcs. Control points will be added to the geometry at the position where initially vertices of original polyline were present.

You can modify this new geometry using those control points or grips. In this case, also the Polyline will geometrically change to series of connected arcs but it will still remain a 2D Polyline.

Your final geometry will look like the one shown below.

Point filters in AutoCAD facilitate selection of some predefined points visually from drawing area by clicking on it. This feature is especially helpful for entering points in 3D but you can also use it in 2D drawings with the same efficiency.

Although point filters might seem very intimidating to you in the beginning but with practice, you will be able to save a good amount of time with it.

Point filters in the 2D drawing:

Let’s take an example of the image below, here we will make the circle in the center of the rectangle with the help of point filters.

Type C on the command line and press enter to start circle command.

Now press and hold the shift key and right click, a contextual menu will appear select point filters from this menu then click on .X from sub menu that appears.

Now click on point B of the rectangle. This tells AutoCAD to take X coordinate of point B and assign it to the X coordinate of the center of the circle. In the rectangle above X coordinates of both B and D points are same so you can also select point D instead of B.

Again press and hold shift key then right click and select point filters from the contextual menu and select .Y from the sub menu. Now click at point A or C this will assign center of the circle with Y coordinate of A or C and in this case too Y co-ordinates of A and C will be same as Y coordinate of the center of the circle.

Now command line will prompt you to select a value for Z coordinate and since you are working in 2D workspace press 0 for Z coordinate and press enter.

A circle will start from the center of rectangle and command line will now prompt you to select a radius value for circle, enter radius and you will have your circle exactly at the center of the rectangle.

Using Point filters for 3D drawings:

Let’s take an example of the image below. In this cube, we have XY plane shown in green color, YZ plane shown in red color and XZ plane shown in blue color. I will use point filters here to make a circle at a point in 3D space taking reference from point A of the cube.

Type C and press enter to start circle command, press and hold the shift key and right click to bring the contextual menu. Select point filters from this contextual menu and select .YZ from sub-menu which appears.

Selecting YZ from point filters menu will tell AutoCAD to use Y and Z coordinates of the point which you are about to select. Click on the corner of cube indicated as point A, AutoCAD will pick Y and Z coordinates of point A and you will now see this prompt on the command line which is prompting you to specify X coordinate.

Enter 2 on the command line and press enter, a circle will start at the point with X coordinate as 2 and Y and Z coordinates of point A. You can now enter the radius of the circle to complete this geometry.

In a similar way, point filters can be used to create geometries taking reference of existing points in the drawing.

Method 1: Using the QUICK command

This one is a relatively new AutoCAD command which can find not only area but also length, radius, angle and several other geometrical properties.

For our example let’s assume we want to find out the area of the region marked A in the following image.

To do that we will first hide the objects like the green door block and the yellow block in the top left corner of the room.

Select the blocks then right-click and select “Isolate” and then select “Hide objects”, these objects will hide and we will have a clean room.

Now select the Quick tool from the “Utilities” panel “Measure” flyout, you can also use the MEA command to activate the Quick measure tool.

Now click on the room and it will highlight in green showing the area of room A as shown in the following image.

To add more areas you can press and hold the shift key and then click on multiple regions of your drawing, these areas will be added to the existing area and the total area will show next to the cursor.

Once you are done finding the area of a drawing region you can bring back the objects we hid in the previous steps.

To unhide the objects right click anywhere in the drawing area then select Isolate and then select End object isolation and all the hidden objects will show up again.

Method 2: Using the AREA command

This is one of the most obvious methods of finding the area of a region in the drawing.

In this case, let’s once again take the example of the previous drawing and now we will again find the area of the room marked A.

But this time we don’t need to hide any object from the drawing view.

Select the AREA command from the Measure flyout of the “Utilities” panel as shown in the following image or you can use the AREA command.

Now Click on the points making the edges of room A and when the entire room is selected press enter key.

If you want to find the area of multiple regions like room A as well as room B together then you can follow the following workflow.

Start the area command from the Measure flyout or use the command AREA.

Click the Add area option from the command line and then click on all the points making the boundary of room A and press enter key.

Now click on on the points making the boundary of room B and press enter again.

The final area of both regions will now show up on the command line as shown in the following image.

Similarly, if you want to subtract the area of a region from the calculated area then you can follow the following workflow.

In this example let’s find the area of room C as shown in the following image excluding the area of the table shaded in grey colour.

To to that start the Area command from the Measure flyout of Utilities panel of use AREA command.

Now select the Add area option from the command line and then click the boundaries of room C and then press enter key.

Now click the Subtract area option on the command line and then click the boundaries making the table in room C and then the total area will show up on the command line as shown in the following animated image.

Method 3: Using Hatches

This is an unconventional yet easy method of finding the area in AutoCAD.

It is especially helpful in situations where the AREA command is slightly difficult to use like rooms or regions with rounded corners.

In rounded corners, you can’t use the AREA command directly because it prompts you to select the corner which does not exist in a room with rounded edges.

You can use the “Object” method of the area command to find the area of these kinds of regions which I have explained in the next method.

For now, let’s find the area of Room D as shown in the following image using the hatch command.

Start the hatch command from the Draw panel of the Home tab or use its command HATCH.

Select any hatch pattern from the list of hatch patterns and then click on room D, I am using the “angle” hatch pattern for this example.

Make sure you include the regions covered by the door as well if you want the total area of the room as shown in the following animated image.

Now select the hatch pattern, if it’s one hatch or select all the hatches if the hatch is made in three parts and then right-click and select the properties option.

Now scroll down the properties palette and there you will find the Area field as shown in the following image.

This area includes the area of the region that apparently seems to be ignored around text D, so you don’t have to worry about the accuracy of the area calculated using this method.

Method 4: Using the Boundary Command

This is yet another unconventional method of finding areas in AutoCAD.

You can make a boundary using a polyline or region and then find the area of that polyline or region which will also be the area of the region.

In the following example let’s find the area of Room E using this method.

We will start by hiding the objects like blocks, text and the door from the room so that we have a clean room for the next steps.

To hide the objects select them from the room and then right-click and select the “Isolate” option and then “Hide objects” from the context menu.

Now select the boundary command from the hatch flyout of the Draw panel on the Home tab as shown in the following image.

Now select the “Polyline” option from the Boundary creation panel and then click the Pick points option as shown in the following image.

Now click inside room E and a new polyline boundary will be created.

Select this newly created polyline and then right-click and select the Properties option.

Now scroll down the properties palette and the area will show up as shown in the following image.

You can also select the AREA command and then click on the “Object” option from the command line and then click the boundary created in the previous steps and the area will show up on the command line.

Once you are done checking the area you can delete the boundary and unhide the objects like blocks and doors hidden in the previous steps.

To “unhide” the objects simply right-click anywhere in the drawing area and then select the “Isolate” option and then select the “End object isolation” option from the context menu.

If you have your own set of favorite tools and commands of AutoCAD then you can create a ribbon panel in AutoCAD especially for your favorite tools and place it for quick access like the one shown in the image below.

To make your custom panel type CUI on the command line and press enter, this will activate customize user interface window. From this window under Customizations in All Files panel expand ribbon tree by clicking the + icon next to it. Right click on Panels and select New Panel from the contextual menu as shown in the image below.

A new panel will be added below existing panels with default name panel1, rename this panel to My Panel by right clicking and selecting rename from the contextual menu. Now we can add our favorite tools to this panel from command list panel which is under Customization in All Files panel as shown in the image below.

This panel lists all commands of AutoCAD and you can search your command using the search bar at the top of commands list panel. Let’s assume that we want to add Donut command to this panel, type Donut and this command will reach to the top of the list. Right click on Donut command and select copy from the contextual menu.

Go to My Panel which we have created in steps above and expand the tree by pressing the + icon, now you will see Row 1 in the My panel tree. Right click on Row 1 and select paste from the contextual menu. Repeat this process for all other commands which you want to add to this panel.

Now our custom panel is ready for use we need to assign a tab for this panel. Right click on My panel and select copy from the contextual menu. Then go to tabs and click on + icon to expand it then select the tab on which you want to paste this panel.

In this example, I will paste it on Manage tab. Select Manage tab then right-click on it and select paste from the contextual menu as shown in image below.

Click on Apply and then OK to close Customize User Interface window.

Now go to manage tab and there you will see My panel with the custom tools and commands as shown in the image below.

To delete this custom panel go to CUI window and delete My panel from the list of panels by right clicking and selecting delete from the contextual menu. Make sure you delete correct panel and avoid deleting any other panel accidentally.

Making drawings in a crowded part of the drawing is a very tedious task as cursor tend to snap to points which we don’t want. Although you can select a particular Object snap from the right contextual menu or you can manually turn off object snaps that are not required.

But the easier way will be cleaning up your drawing space to remove unnecessary clutter and work in a clean area. Hide and Isolate options are made specifically for these type of situations.

For example, if you have a floor plan with lots of blocks and annotations covering a certain part of drawing then you can hide some of those objects to clear the mess and work in that area. Later on, when you are done with the drawing you can bring back those hidden objects.

You can do it using layer visibility toggle as well but in that case, all objects on a particular layer are affected but with the Hide and Isolate option you can selectively hide interfering objects.

Isolating objects:

From drawing select components which you want to keep in drawing then right click to bring the contextual menu. From this menu select isolate then isolate objects.

All the objects from the drawing will disappear leaving only drawing objects which you have selected, now you have a clutter free drawing to work with. Don’t worry the remaining objects are not deleted they are only hidden from the view and you can always bring them back.

Hiding objects:

If you are interested in hiding only certain components from drawings then you can use hide option from the contextual menu. Select objects that you want to hide from drawing then right click to bring the contextual menu and select Isolate then Hide objects.

This will hide only the objects which you have selected leaving all the remaining objects active in drawing area.

Ending object isolation:

To bring all objects back in the view right click anywhere in drawing area and select Isolate from the contextual menu then select End Object Isolation. This will bring all hidden and isolated objects back in the drawing area.

You can also end object isolation by clicking Isolate Object icon on the status bar and selecting End Object Isolation from the menu that appears.

You can divide object with blocks in AutoCAD like Polyline, Spline or Circle in equal segments or at equal intervals using divide and measure command. You can also divide objects in AutoCAD using points or nodes but in this article, I will use blocks instead of points for creating divisions.

Let’s take an example of the image shown below. Here we have an irregular shaped pond and we will add tree along its border at equal intervals.

I have already created a block with name Tree and I will use this block at each division point.

Type DIVIDE on the command line and press enter to start the command you can also select Divide command from expanded Draw panel of Home tab. Command line will prompt you to select an object, select boundary of the pond. Now on command line, you will see this prompt

Click on Block option from this command prompt or you can also type B and press enter to select Block option from the command line. Now command line will prompt you to select the name of the block which you want to insert at division points, type Tree for this case and press enter.

The prompt will now ask you whether you want to align block with boundary object or not. Select yes from this option if you want the object to change orientation according to the path. Select no if you want to keep the orientation of block fixed at all points on the path.

Our current tree block is circular so selecting either of the options will have negligible effect hence I will select Yes from the prompt. Finally, the command line will prompt you to enter the number of segments in which you want to divide the boundary, enter 12 in this case and press enter.

You will notice that 12 Tree blocks will be added to the boundary of the pond at equal spacing as shown in the image below.

Similarly, you can divide object with blocks in AutoCAD at an equal distance using MEASURE command but in the case of measure, you need to enter the length of the segment instead of the number of segments.

One of the most popular output formats of AutoCAD drawing is Portable Document Format or PDF. A drawing exported in PDF format can preserve layer data, custom font styles, and other properties.

If a drawing contains multiple layouts then you can choose to get the PDF output as a single document with layouts in its sheets or you can plot them separately as well. The quality of output can also be controlled using settings of PDF plotters.

In this article, I will show you some basic methods with which you can get output in PDF format from your AutoCAD drawing with many different settings.

Plot to PDF:

To plot a drawing to PDF press CTRL+P on keyboard or type PLOT on the command line and press enter, this will open plot window in AutoCAD. Select DWG to PDF.pc3 plotter from the list of plotters.

If you are using AutoCAD 2016 then you can also select other PDF plotters with some predefined settings like AutoCAD PDF (General documentation).pc3 which has a resolution of 1200 dpi and AutoCAD PDF (High Quality print).pc3 which has a resolution of 2400 dpi.

You can also select Publish to web JPG.pc3, Publish to web PNG.pc3 or TIFF plotters to get output in image formats. You can also get high resolution images from AutoCAD by configuring custom plotter.

PDF Export:

Type EPDF on the command line and press enter to start the export PDF command. Select the preset from PDF Preset drop-down menu. You can customize this preset using options button of Current settings panel as shown in the image below.

The PDF settings can be changed as per your requirement using Options button, I have discussed the PDF options settings in next section of the article.

When you use this command in layout view you will find an additional Export field with the current layout and all layouts options. Select All layouts option from this drop down menu if you want to plot all layouts of current drawing into a single PDF file.

PDF Options:

The 2016 version of AutoCAD saw some major enhancements in the PDF feature. This included additional PDF plotters with various quality preset and an option to control properties of PDF. You can customize all of these PDF related settings from Export to DWF/PDF panel of Output window as shown in the image below.

You can manage the quality of PDF output from Vector Quality and Raster Quality drop down menus. You can change the resolution value to suit your needs, a higher resolution will allow quality printing but it will also consume more ink. So always try to print your drawings with optimal resolution value.

If you are creating the PDF for display on monitors then a higher resolution value can be selected.

The Merge Control drop down menu will control the overlapping lines of the drawings. Lines Overwrite option will create the lines with the colour of line on the top at the intersection point, whereas Lines Merge option will make lines of merged colour at the intersection.

There are also several options on Data panel of the PDF Options window that you can use to control your PDF output even further.

If you want to preserve layer information in the output then check the Include layer information radio button. You can also capture TrueType fonts of the drawing and include it in the PDF file so that PDF readers can read the fonts directly from the PDF file and they don’t have to substitute the fonts.

If for any reason you are unable to include your TrueType fonts in the PDF output then you can convert the text into geometry by selecting the Convert all text to geometry radio button. The shape fonts are always plotted as geometry irrespective of the selection made in Data panel

Once you have made your settings click on ok to close the PDF Options window.

Publish to PDF:

One of the advantages of the Publish option is the ability to plot multi-sheet PDF files. To use this option type PUBLISH on the command line and press enter. From Publish to drop-down menu of Publish window select PDF as format and click on Publish Options button as shown in the image below.

From PDF Publish options window select the Multi-sheet file radio button and adjust settings if you want, click on ok and select Publish. Specify the location where you want to save the PDF file and click on Select button to get the final output.
